Mr. Mark Cachia-Markham MD FRCOphth FEBO
UK CAA-accredited Aviation Medical Examiner, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Commercial Pilot/Flight Instructor

Mark gained his PPL(A) before joining medical school at the University of Malta, where he graduated in 2012. He then moved to the UK to complete a two-year housemanship, after which he joined the Ophthalmology Specialist Training Programme in the North East. During this time, he remained active as a pilot and furthered his flight training, eventually gaining the ME-CPL/IR and Flight Instructor rating.
He worked as a Flight Instructor at Teesside and Newcastle, and occasionally in Malta, until he achieved his full specialist qualification in Ophthalmology and became a Consultant. At that point, he had the opportunity to fly Beechcraft King Air aircraft for an air ambulance and charter company, an experience that provided invaluable insight into the world of commercial aviation.
Recognising the need for Aviation Medical Examiners in the UK, particularly those with a strong aviation background, he decided to combine two of his greatest passions: aviation and medicine. He enrolled in the Basic, and later the Advanced, Courses in Aviation Medicine at King’s College London. Following acceptance by the UK CAA, he completed his AME training in one of the major Aeromedical Centres in the UK, where he was authorised to perform UK CAA aeromedical examinations.
On the flying side, he aspired to operate faster, more complex aircraft and therefore joined the airline world initially flying the Embraer 190 out of London's Category C airport (London City Airport). He later returned to the North East, where he now flies the Boeing 737 alongside his NHS work as a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Glaucoma and Cataract, and as a UK CAA-accredited Aviation Medical Examiner.
